How to Stay Accountable To Yourself & Your Workouts!

Accountability. It’s a crucial piece in reaching our goals. But oftentimes we associate it with perfectionism. How many times have you given up on something because you messed up once or twice.

“I ate bad for lunch so I’ll just start over tomorrow.”

“I missed today’s workout so I’ll just start fresh on Monday.”

Sound familiar? Accountability is being responsible for your actions. Be responsible enough to make sure your next meal that same day is a better choice. Be responsible enough to go for a 20 minute walk around the neighborhood after work since you missed your morning workout to get some movement in for the day. Be responsible enough to adapt to the hiccups that will happen instead of letting it discourage you.

3 Tips to Stay Accountable to your Health & Wellness Goals:

  1. Set specific goals: Define clear, achievable objectives to keep yourself focused. It’s great to have a big goal! It’s just as important to have smaller goals to set along the way. Think of it as the steps to the top. Each small goal you achieve is a step closer to getting the grand prize. Small victories along the way will keep you focused and excited.
  1. Create a schedule: Establish a consistent workout routine to build a habit. Make an appointment with yourself, mark it on your planner, & show up. By not doing so, you’re already setting yourself up for failure. It’s not a priority. Make those weekly appointments.
  1. Stay positive: Embrace setbacks as learning opportunities & maintain a positive mindset throughout your journey. You’re going to mess up…more than once. You’re going to have small setbacks (1 or 2 missed workouts) & you’ll have a bigger ones (a week long binge). Use it as a learning opportunity. Why did I lose control of my eating? What kept me from having enough time to finish my workout? And stay positive! Don’t punish yourself or talk down to yourself for setbacks. If someone else were saying negative things to you, it would probably deter you from continuing. The brain processes our negative self-talks the same as if someone else were saying it to us. Be kind to yourself and keep moving forward!
